About

Easel was founded by Matt Hogg — a behaviour specialist and consultant with lived experience, professional expertise, and a lifelong connection to health and social care.

Easel represents the idea that every person is a whole picture — a blend of layers, history, and detail.

The easel doesn’t change the painting; it simply supports it.
It steadies the canvas, sets the frame, and helps the full image become clearer.
That’s the heart of this work: creating the conditions that let people be understood with dignity, clarity, and compassion.

E – Environment & Expectations

Safety, predictability, and prevention start with the space we create.

A – Attunement & Arousal Regulation

Regulate yourself first, calm supports calm.

S – Supportive Communication

What we say, and how we say it, shapes every outcome.

E – Evidence-Led Responses

Understand behaviour, don’t guess at it.

L – Learning & Culture

Behaviour support is a team effort, not an individual one.

These five principles form the foundation of The Easel Method™ — understand the person, shape the environment, regulate yourself, communicate well, and build a culture where people can truly thrive.

Introduction

I work at the intersection of behaviour, communication and human relationships. My background blends lived experience, Positive Behaviour Support, service leadership and frontline practice, giving me a grounded, realistic understanding of what people and teams need to thrive.

My role isn’t clinical — it’s practical, human and educational.
I help staff understand why behaviour happens, how the environment shapes it, and what they can do to support people with dignity, clarity and compassion.

Whether I’m training a team, reviewing an incident, or helping develop support plans, my focus is always the same:

  • reduce stress

  • increase understanding

  • improve communication

  • strengthen relationships

  • build safe, calm environments

I bridge the gap between theory and real life — giving teams tools that work in practice not just on paper.

I work directly with every individual, family, and organisation I support — ensuring that the approach is personal, consistent, and grounded in trust.

My work is grounded in Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), trauma-informed practice, and over three decades of real-world experience in health, social care, and community safety.

I provide practical, person-centred support that empowers teams to think proactively, reduce risk, and create environments where people can truly thrive.

I don’t just write plans — I build understanding. Whether you need crisis support, staff training, or culture change, I'll meet you where you are and help you move forward with confidence and compassion.

Easel isn’t a large organisation — it’s the platform through which I share the skills, insight, and compassion built over a lifetime in care.

Bio

My journey in health and social care began at the age of two, growing up in a home shared with adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and mental health conditions.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's my mum, Lucy Hogg, was a learning disability nurse in training and a foster carer. She was involved in a pioneering remand placement pilot with Leicestershire Police, providing residential care for people in crisis — often individuals with complex needs, repeat offences, or substance misuse.

Alongside that, she championed sex education for people with learning disabilities, long before it was widely discussed or supported. She believed that education, autonomy, and honest conversations were essential to dignity and safety — principles that remain at the heart of good support today.

In the early 2000s, she went on to establish day services and supported living provision, laying the foundations for what would later become my own journey in this field and the platform I build upon today.

Our family home in Barwell became a seven-bedroom whirlwind of care, chaos, and compassion. It was a place where no two days were ever the same — where resilience, humour, and empathy weren’t optional, they were essential.

Growing up in that environment taught me what real care looks like — not just the kind delivered through policy, but the kind built on patience, boundaries, and respect. It shaped how I see people, behaviour, and stress to this day.

At 16, I volunteered with SNIPS, supporting adults with learning disabilities on trips that included Leicester City football matches, Drayton Manor Park and the Millennium Dome. After turning 18, I became a support worker and later a senior support worker before pursuing a successful career in entertainment and performance — a chapter that taught me the art of communication, connection, and crowd psychology.

Even while I was performing full-time, I stayed connected to the people and families who first shaped my understanding of care — DJing at events, fundraisers, and celebrations for services linked to the local community.

When I returned to health and social care in 2018, I retrained as a professional trainer across multiple disciplines, including First Aid, Moving & Handling, Safeguarding (Adults and Children), and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), achieving the Award in Education and Training (AET).

Today, I work extensively across the sector as a consultant for Heroic Care, partnering with Leicestershire NHS, Leicestershire County Council, and Leicestershire Adult Social Care to deliver PBS plans, risk assessments, support plans, and cultural transformation projects.

My approach is shaped by both personal and professional experience. Having grown up living alongside both service users and staff, I understand the realities of burnout, the importance of capable environments, and the need for teams to feel seen, supported, and skilled.

I view staff and families as experts in the lives they support. My role is to be an extension of their insight — another set of eyes to help make sense of what’s happening, restore perspective, and co-create effective, sustainable solutions.

I believe in communication-led support: using connection, calm, and curiosity instead of control. My goal is always to help people maintain internal control, rather than be subjected to external control — allowing space for dignity, self-expression, and growth.

Values & Standards

I believe that quality isn’t a badge — it’s a behaviour.

Before setting up Easel, I was creating and delivering training that was Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) approved and accredited by the British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD) through a service-level agreement.

During that time, my work consistently met and exceeded the expected standards.

In 2025, I made a conscious decision to step away from formal accreditation and from teaching any restraint-based training altogether - because I believe that the future of PBS does not belong in crisis measures that require a badge.

I came to believe that the most meaningful change happens when environments and relationships are capable enough that restraint is never planned for — where staff are supported, communication is prioritised, and people are given room to flourish safely.

That belief became the foundation for Easel.

My work is now entirely proactive, preventive, and communication-led — focused on understanding, early intervention, and the creation of capable environments that make restrictive practices unnecessary.

That said, I’m not naïve to reality - emergencies do happen.
When they do, safety comes first. Easel’s approach is multi-disciplinary, well-considered, and built on immediate reflection and behavioural analysis - understanding what led to the event and how to prevent it from
recurring.

I create emergency plans that focus on safety, communication, and recovery — never on planned restraint.
These plans are developed collaboratively with teams and families so that everyone feels prepared, confident, and consistent when things become difficult.

I continue to operate fully in line with RRN training standards, the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) framework, and the principles of trauma-informed care — but my investment is in people, not bureaucracy.

The model is continuously refined through supervision, reflection, and real-world outcomes. Easel maintains comprehensive insurance, enhanced DBS certification, and ICO registration, upholding robust data protection and safeguarding policies at every level.

At its heart, Easel exists to bring people together — to understand behaviour, build capable environments, and create cultures where compassion and consistency thrive.

Best Practice

Easel aligns with nationally recognised best practice, including the Positive Behaviour Support Framework, trauma-informed approaches, and the principles of the RRN Standards. Services

I work independently under Easel,  which means every assessment, plan, and piece of advice comes directly from me. This ensures consistency, accountability, and a genuine working relationship with the people I support.

I provide family training, direct outreach during emergencies, and multi-agency liaison where required — including working alongside police, health, and social care teams to ensure coordinated, trauma-informed responses.

A clear, simple approach to pricing
